Bushel & Peck’s
328 State Street
Bushel and Peck’s is both a store and a restaurant, featuring locally-sourced organic food. Located about three blocks from campus, B&P is a favorite hangout for a cup of coffee on their comfy sofas or a great meal with friends. Their great menu runs from burgers -- the
Downright Awesome" -- and sandwiches to salads, healthy alternatives like yogurt and oatmeal and sweet and savory dishes like the "Farm Taco Scramble" or "Decadent French Toast." And don't forget to take a look at the daily specials -- like Black Angus Chili or Gingered Squash Soup. Also, there's Trivia Night on Thursdays, a great fish fry on Fridays, and a farm-to-table family style dinner on the first Saturday of the month. If you have time for only one restaurant stop in Beloit, this is it.
Bagels and More
324 State Street
Who would have thought a great bagel could be found in Wisconsin? It’s here, in this appealing downtown shop that is open every day for breakfast and lunch. Don't miss the great homemade soups, as well as their quiche of the day.
315 State Street
Paninis, pasta, burgers, salads, and specials. Conveniently located right downtown, Little Bistro is charming, intimate, friendly and inexpensive.
Wisconsin Supper Clubs
Wisconsin is famous for the supper club—a throw-back to another era of fine dining that included relish trays and real cocktails. Check out this New York Times article on Wisconsin supper clubs and their custom-cut dry-aged steaks, lobster, and cocktails. Beloit has three supper clubs worth visiting:
615 Broad Street
A three block walk from campus, the 615 Club is a small, quaint dining establishment featuring good prime rib and excellent walleye -- as well as salmon, steak, prime rib, artichoke dip, lobster, escargot and double-cut pork chops. The bread basket includes cinnamon rolls and the relish tray will bear pickled herring for those who request it. It's also known for its martinis and au gratin potatoes.
The Butterfly Club
5246 East County Road X
Located about 5 miles northwest of downtown Beloit, the Butterfly Club has a more extensive menu -- from roast duckling to rack of lamb and broiled filet of cod -- but most diners rely on house favorites such as prime rib and fried chicken. And the Friday Night Fish Fry should not be missed. There's a large outdoor deck when weather permits.
1901 Liberty Avenue
Located on the west side of Beloit, Liberty Inn features great steaks and most anything else you’d expect from a supper club, including a Friday Night Fish Fry. In addition to the steaks and chops, a typical evening of chef's specials might include sesame red snapper with basmati rice or sun-dried tomato and herb-crusted chicken breast with angel hair pasta and balsamic scallion sauce.
